Nostalgia on the Emerald Isle (Montserrat)
I wrote this piece nostalgia on the Emerald Isle the day I flew in to the Caribbean island of Montserrat. Montserrat is situated 15 minutes off the island of Antigua and Barbuda. It is that island that had an active volcano erupting from 1995 up until about three years ago. Sometimes referred to as the Emerald Isle and paradise this little island of about 5000 is the home of my birth. The last time I visited before my visit in July 2018 was 2001. I felt nostalgic and wanted to do all the things I did whilst still living on island. As a result I wrote this song in memorandum and expectation. I had a fabulous time which is reflected in this song/poetry.
Nostalgia
Nostalgia on the Emerald Isle,
Nostalgia I am on Strat for a while
Beautiful paradise
Made by Gods hand so nice
Beautiful Paradise how I miss that life
Nostalgia on the Emerald Isle
Meeting and greeting in Caribbean style
Mango stoning on my mind like old times
Pineapple sweet, coconut, guava and lime
Home sweet home for calabash festival time
De mermaid from up in chances Pond
Past Brodericks we always had a bond
No transport to take me to mountain top
She won’t cry for she has learnt to adapt
I’m still waiting for nostalgic tears
I’ve been gone for the last 16 years
Woke up sweet to the sound of ZJB
‘Oh Montserrat’? how I miss your serenity
Your calmness and pure tranquility
Unique terrain and so much greenery
Dawn breaking to sound of crowing cock
Alarming? like the early morning clock!
Awesome to come home unlike the prodigal
Oh Montserrat your daughter is home jovial
Mother your daughter is reuniting for a time!
First of all I must go little Bay to buss a lime
Not sure what my writing did to my eyes
Look ?now I’m tearing up and I’m crying
Nostalgia on Montserrat the Emerald Isle
Welcome home Montserrat’s lovely child
Thank you Lord for bringing me home safe
Thank you Lord now I see a familiar face
Thank you Lord for this beautiful country, Thank you Lord it will always be home to me.
This photo was taken as I stepped off the plane and exited immigration. I was intrigued by the poster reading ‘A hundred thousand welcomes…..
